Brewery Wastewater Treatment Methods

As per the latest statistics, there are around 320 breweries and distilleries in the country, producing up to 800 million liters annually. This rapid growth has led to a sharp increase in wastewater volumes. Brewery wastewater primarily originates from:

• Brewing and saccharification processes
• Primary and secondary fermentation
• Finishing stages: filtration, carbonation, bottling, sterilization

Brewery wastewater typically contains high concentrations of hydrocarbons, cellulose, hemicellulose, pentose, bittering agents, colorants, chlorides, and other substances. Therefore, it requires specific treatment methods to meet environmental standards before being discharged.

Brewery Wastewater Treatment Process

As shown in the diagram, wastewater from various production stages passes through screens and is collected in a sump. It is then sent to an equalization tank for processes like aeration, flow stabilization, thickening, and partial removal of BOD and COD compounds. Next, the wastewater is pumped into a settling tank to remove suspended organic solids.

After mechanical treatment, the wastewater undergoes a closed-loop biological treatment process, including anaerobic treatment in a UASB tank followed by aerobic treatment in an Aerotank. The wastewater is then transferred to a second settling tank for water and sludge separation. The process splits into two streams: water is disinfected, while sludge is dewatered. Treated water can be reused for irrigation, and sludge is treated separately.
